Organic compounds which contain P-C-P bonds, where P stands for phosphonates or phosphonic acids. These compounds affect calcium metabolism. They inhibit ectopic calcification and slow down bone resorption and bone turnover. Technetium complexes of diphosphonates have been used successfully as bone scanning agents.

Zoledronic acid A bisphosphonate used to treat malignancy associated hypercalcemia, multiple myeloma, and bone metastasis from solid tumors. Alendronic acid A bisphosphonate drug that prevents osteoclastic bone resorption which is used for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. Tiludronic acid A bisphosphonate used for the treatment of Paget's disease of bone. Incadronic acid Incadronate has been investigated in the treatment of myeloma,[A14426,A14431] leukemia, and other cancers.
